Dr Andrew Barrie is a New Zealand-born architectural critic and designer formerly based in Tokyo. After completing doctoral studies in Japan, Andrew was a project architect in the office of Toyo Ito, one of the world’s most innovative and influential architects, and later at Cheshire Architects in Auckland. Andrew own design work is widely celebrated, having won numerous awards in both Japan and NZ—including a prestigious named award from the New Zealand Institute of Architects—and has been exhibited nationally and internationally. He is a regular contributor to architecture and design journals, and has authored three books on the work of Japanese architects. He has made significant contributions to architectural culture in New Zealand, recognized by the award (with the Block Foundation) of the NZIA’s Auckland Cup for services to architecture, and his election to the Royal Society of New Zealand.
