RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research is at the interface of data science and learning and focuses on task and tool design for teaching statistical modeling and for supporting the integration of statistical and computational thinking. My MProfStuds (Mathematics Education) explored how teachers use informal tests to determine the fit of a probability distribution model. I developed a new informal test for the fit of a probability distribution model that incorporates sample size and the expected variation of sample proportions within a new simulation-based modelling visualisation tool. My PhD research aimed to find accessible ways to introduce statistics students to data science. This included building data-related knowledge and capabilities and computational thinking within the New Zealand Curriculum for Statistics, and developing new frameworks for integrating statistical and computational thinking, and for designing tasks to introduce code-driven tools. I am interested in how technologies and assessment methods can support learning at scale while keeping human judgement, reasoning, and creativity at the centre.
