Anthony Hōete is a Professor of Architecture (Māori) and is of Ngāti Awa and Ngāti Ranana descent. His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) from the University of Auckland, a Master of Architecture from The Bartlett at University College London, and a PhD in Architecture from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Anthony's architectural design and research have played a key role in advancing both New Zealand and Māori architecture on the world stage. In 2002, he founded his own practice, WHAT_architecture, in London and has since produced over 250+ design projects, including residential, commercial, educational and marae buildings, furniture, and publications, predominantly in Europe but also here in New Zealand. The originality of these designs is evidenced by 40+ national and international awards, including the most prestigious architectural prizes in NZ and the UK. A registered architect in four countries, including The Netherlands (SBA), the United Kingdom (ARB, RIBA), Aotearoa NZ (NZIA NZRAB) and Australia (ARB NSW), his transnational knowledge of professional practice is unrivalled here in NZ.

As MD of the London-based property developer Game of Architecture, he specialises in build-to-rent affordable housing made from cross-laminated timber. These learnings are being deployed in social housing projects such as papakāinga with Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa. A leader in the field of Māori architecture, his current project with Ngāti Ira o Waioweka, Te Whare Mīmiro, is likely to be the most broadcasted work of Māori architectural design in New Zealand history, featuring across all primetime news channels over one weekend in April 2023. He is also among the Pacific region’s leading commentators on indigenous architecture, having contributed to seminal conferences and publications on Māori architecture, and his voice regularly features on radio and TV, including TVNZ's Sunday (with Mava Moayyed) and Designing Dreams (with Matthew Ridge).

Anthony has taught at the world's top two architecture schools: The Bartlett UCL (QS Rank #1) and TU Delft (QS rank #2). He has also taught at the esteemed Architecture Association in London, Sint Lucas Architektur in Brussels, the American University of Beirut and today he is an Adjunct Professor at Australia's highest ranked architecture school, the RMIT in Melbourne (QS Rank #18). Anthony participates in the RMIT European Doctoral Innovators (REDI) programme (https://www.rediprogram.eu/), which is co-funded by the European Union to create new research and enterprise links between Australia and Europe.

He is an Honorary Research Scholar at UCL and was the Pouwhakahaere (Director) at QuakeCoRE (http://www.quakecore.nz/welcome-anthony-hoete-pouwhakahaere-maori-associate-director-maori/), a NZ Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) for seismic resilience funded by the Tertiary Education Commission. Anthony is a former Trustee of The NZUK Link Foundation (http://www.nzuklink.com), which, under the Patronage of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Princess Royal, serves to enhance the close relationship between NZ and the UK.
