BIO

I am a Senior Lecturer (equivalent to Associate Professor in many international university systems) in the School of Computer Science, with over 20 years of experience in research and teaching. My research spans Cybersecurity, Applied AI, Computer Networks, and Distributed Systems, addressing real-world problems in network security, intelligent threat detection, multimodal large language models, and data-driven analysis of online platforms and communities.

Areas of Expertise: Cybersecurity, Applied AI, Network Science.

My research combines rigorous systems measurement with modern machine learning methods, with the shared goal of building technology that is more secure, more robust, and better understood. Current projects in my group include AI-driven cyber threat detection, adversarial robustness of large vision-language models, cost-efficient multi-agent reasoning for financial intelligence, and the characterisation of emerging online platforms. My work has been published at top-tier, competitive, internationally recognised peer-reviewed venues, and has received a Best Paper Award at an international conference.

I have published over 80 refereed papers in leading IEEE and ACM venues, cited over 2,300 times with an H-index of 22 (Google Scholar). I have received competitive research funding from national and international sources, including a Royal Society Catalyst Seeding grant. I serve on the editorial boards of four international journals, have examined over 25 PhD theses at universities worldwide, and am a co-founder of the Network Traffic Measurement and Analysis (TMA) Conference, one of the premier venues for Internet measurements research globally.

Mentorship is a core part of how I work. I have supervised over 100 students at PhD, Master's, and Bachelor's level, including projects with industry partners such as Spark, Fonterra, and Sky. My research network spans New Zealand, Australia, India, Canada, and the United States, and graduates from my group now hold positions at leading universities and technology organisations across these countries and beyond.

If you are a prospective PhD or Master's student interested in cybersecurity or applied AI, I warmly encourage you to get in touch. Scholarship funding is available for strong candidates, and I respond to every enquiry.
