BIO
Deborah Kakis is a PhD candidate at the Statistics Department at the University of Auckland under the supervision of Associate Professor Stephanie Budgett and Doctor Charlotte Jones-Tood. Her research focuses on statistical literacy of healthcare professionals in Papua New Guinea. Before undertaking her PhD, she was a maths/statistics educator in Papua New Guinea. Her interactions with health professionals, many of whom were her former students, brought to her attention a skill gap among the healthcare community. There is a need for strong statistical literacy skill to be able to engage in research activities as well as implement evidence-based practice. This PhD is her way of responding to the need she has identified and to try to begin a process that can help enhance this skillset among the healthcare workforce in Papua New Guinea.
