BIO
Nicholas Kay is a Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, specialising in the Aerodynamics of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). His research primarily uses Wind Tunnel and Free-Flight experimental techniques. Currently, Nicholas is part of the Drone Technology Research Group, led by Associate Professor Karl Stol. He is also a Member of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
His PhD research investigated the impact of tubrulent flows on the aerodynamic performance of UAV wings. The effects of environmental conditions, such as turbulence and icing, on UAV flight are a major interest in his research, with a focus on experimental studies through wind tunnel testing. Recent work has focused on measuring atmospheric flows via fixed-wing and rotary wing UAV platforms.
Additional to UAV experience, he worked in a design and development role in the Airvo Team at Fisher & Paykel Healthcare.
