Associate Professor Monica Acosta is a biologist who applies interdisciplinary research to preclinical investigations in the field of ocular pathology and neuropathology. Her research goals are to develop successful strategies for early diagnosis of neurological and ocular diseases and to identify targets for therapeutic intervention through advancing knowledge of pre-clinical animal models. She has developed an independent line of cross-disciplinary research in the field of retinal biology, ocular imaging and retinal diagnostics for translational research. She is the leader of the Cell and Molecular Biology of the Retina (CMBR) Laboratory within the School of Optometry and Vision Science and investigator for the Centre of Brain Research (CBR) and for the New Zealand National Eye Centre. Dr Acosta now is leading a group of young researchers studying cell and molecular components in pathologies of eye diseases. In particular, she is researching in-vitro and in-vivo models of retinal degeneration (age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, cone-rod dystrophies) and brain pathologies associated with visual problems (Alzheimer's disease). Her training in biology of the eye has allowed her to investigate New Zealand species notorious for having extreme adaptations of vision (squid, kiwi, kakapo, lamprey) and have utilized various clinical techniques (electroretinogram, optical coherence tomography) for the assessment of the most useful study models for translational research.

Whilst growing up I was fascinated by cells! This led me to Leeds University in England where I completed a BSc (Hons). I then moved to Scotland where I studied for my MSc and PhD at the Rowett Institute (RI) in Aberdeen. During my PhD I assessed the potential of novel proteins as drug delivery agents. I continued my research at the RI for a further two years and during this period became involved in commercial research. I then relocated to New Zealand in 2003 to take up a position as a research fellow in the Human Immunology Team headed by Prof Rod Dunbar at the University of Auckland. Whilst working with Rod and his team, my main research focus was the study of immune cells called Antigen Presenting Cells (APCs).
At the beginning of 2012 I was appointed as a permanent academic in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Auckland. Since then, my research team has continued to work on how APCs stimulate appropriate immune responses and more recently have started to investigate how cells and molecular mediators influence the endothelial cell layers that line our blood vessels. I feel extremely fortunate that I get to share my enthusiasm for cell biology with our undergraduate and postgraduate students.- Science
