Tristan began his career as a secondary school physics teacher in 2008. During his career as a teacher, he has been the Head of Department and has extensive experience with the NCEA and CIE (Cambridge International Examinations) curricula. Tristan works alongside Auckland secondary school physics teachers in organising the annual Physics Teacher's Day held at the University of Auckland and is involved in science and physics teacher training though the Faculty of Education.

Distinctions/Honours:

- Awarded the NZ Institute of Physics Rutherford Trophy for innovation physics education (2024).
- Awarded the Faculty of Science Sustained Excellence in Teaching Award (2022).
