W. Dean Sutcliffe is Professor in the School of Music at the University of Auckland, and has been co-editor of Eighteenth-Century Music, published by Cambridge University Press, since its inception in 2004. His research interests focus on the eighteenth century, and publications have covered composers such as Domenico Scarlatti, Gyrowetz, Boccherini, Mozart, Andreas Romberg, Scarlatti’s Spanish contemporary Sebastián de Albero, Manuel Blasco de Nebra and above all Haydn. He was awarded the Dent Medal for 2009 by the Royal Musical Association. He recently served the last of four terms as Vice President of the Society for Eighteenth-Century Music, and is currently a member of the Committee of Honour of the Haydn Society of Great Britain and a member of the Advisory Board of the Haydn Society of North America. Recent publications include an edition of the three string quartets Op. 42 by Adalbert Gyrowetz (2017), the entry “Musical Materials” in The Cambridge Haydn Encyclopedia (2019), the chapter “Gracious Beethoven?” in Beethoven Studies 4 (2020), the article “Counterpoint without Anxiety? Andreas Romberg’s String Quartets Op. 2, Dedicated to Haydn” in String Quartets in Beethoven’s Europe, ed. Nancy November (Boston: Academic Studies Press, 2022), and the book Instrumental Music in an Age of Sociability: Haydn, Mozart and Friends (2020), which was awarded the Marjorie Weston Emerson Prize by the Mozart Society of North America. His most recent article is “What is Haydn Doing in a John Field Nocturne?” (Music Analysis 42/2 (2023)).
