Yiqian Violet Wang is a doctoral candidate in Music at the Arts and Education, University of Auckland, New Zealand, where she is conducting research in musicology. Her doctoral research focuses on Maria Szymanowska and her influence on early nineteenth-century European musical culture, with particular attention to salon culture, female musicianship, musical networks, reception history, and the relationship between gender, sociability, and professional identity. She is especially interested in exploring how female musicians negotiated social norms and professional opportunities in the early nineteenth century, and how music functioned within private, semi-public, and public cultural spaces.

Before beginning her doctoral study, Yiqian gained several years of experience in piano teaching and music education, working with students in private music school settings. This practical background in piano pedagogy, performance training, music theory, and musicianship informs her current musicological research, allowing her to connect historical study with an understanding of musical practice.

Her current doctoral project examines Szymanowska’s career, compositions, and cultural networks in the context of early nineteenth-century Europe. Through the study of musical works, contemporary reviews, biographical materials, and salon practices, her research aims to reassess Szymanowska’s significance as a pioneering female musician and her contribution to the transformation of European musical culture.
